Beneath the Floorboards is a documentary about weight stigma that tracks the true story of Chevese Turner and her mother Donna Underhill. The film chronicles their heartbreaking struggles with binge eating disorder, weight stigma, and its harmful effects. Throughout the documentary, treatment professionals across many disciplines share their findings and shed light on the gravity of this predicament.
Beneath the Floorboards presents an intense look at bullying due to weight stigma, the insidious bias that assaults individuals living in larger bodies daily, and the feelings of shame, disordered eating, and other adverse effects that plague these individuals as a result of this bullying.
The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) and the NORMAL nonprofit are collaborating to produce this documentary.
Our goal is to raise awareness of:
- How pervasive and damaging weight stigma is in our society
- The mental illness, binge eating disorder (up to 50% of those living in larger bodies may be struggling)
- How some individuals who are larger are fit, healthy, and happy are NOT struggling from a mental illness, nor do they need to lose weight
